In honor of Spike Jonze being nominated for Oscars in Best Picture (producer), Best Original Screenplay (writer), and Original Song for his new film, Her, I meandered down a rabbit hole of his music videos, which led to his commercials, and, finally, the skateboarding videos where he got his start. What struck me is the playful, child-like nature most of his videos possess, not to mention a few choreographed dance numbers (the award-winning video he starred in for Fatboy Slim) and animal love (like this adorable Weezer video).
Paste and The Daily Beast have already conveniently compiled some of his best videos, but below are ones he directed for artists in the 33 1/3 arsenal, followed by a live performance of Spike and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O singing “The Moon Song,” for which they are nominated.
Sonic Youth, “100%”
Dinosaur Jr., “Feel the Pain”
The Beastie Boys, “Sabotage”
Ween, “Freedom of ’76”
Pavement, “Shady Lane”
Kanye West, “Flashing Lights”
creepy hilarious short film by Spike and Kanye, “We Were Once a Fairytale”
