Dig Me Out – Sleater-Kinney

By Jovana Babović

Coming Spring 2016!

Sleater-Kinney’s 1997 album Dig Me Out just barely clocks in at half an hour. Listening to it leaves you with an unsettling sense of having just been punched in the gut: the vocals are edgy, the guitars are raw, and the drums thump-thump forcefully. But this much can be said of Sleater-Kinney’s entire seven-album discography. Dig Me Out, however, the band’s third studio album, marks the moment when Sleater-Kinney we no longer just three women from Olympia, WA delivering punk punches off of an independent label – they were also budding mainstream darlings.

This is the story of a musical moment when seemingly fragmented strains of culture overlapped; Dig Me Out was critically acclaimed in national music presses but never lost credibility among local and independent communities. At the same time, in a period of popular culture saturated by polarized gender norms, especially for women, the album reclaimed a different sort of cultural space for female performers – just as it negotiated the legacy of the early 1990s riot grrrl movement. Alongside the album’s own punches, this book delivers a narrative that situates both Dig Me Out and Sleater-Kinney into larger discussions of punk, feminism, and authenticity in popular culture.

A bit about the author: Jovana Babović is historian of culture, society, and urban life. She holds a Ph.D from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and teaches at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
