Video Vault, Episode 34: An Homage to Wowee Zowee

This week’s Video Vault is brought to you by editorial assistant Michelle Chen.

For far longer than I’d like to admit, I was at a loss as to what my first ever blog post would be. And a Video Vault too–talk about pressure! But then it became obvious that I should start my time at 33 1/3 with a book that converted me from a sometimes, to avid fan of the series: Bryan Charles’s Wowee Zowee.

I may or may not have an unhealthy obsession with Pavement, the anthem of my inner fifteen-year-old and forever the only band that will make transferring between the L and the 2 trains a little more bearable. My first thought was “Summer Babe,” arguably one of the greatest rock songs of the 90s (and, dare I say, ever?), but then I remembered that wonderfully hilarious and poignant moment in Wowee Zowee when Charles, broke college grad, splurges on a twelve-dollar Pavement show in the fall of 1997. And while I don’t have that magical 1997 show in Grand Rapids at my fingertips, I can bring you this live performance of “Grounded” in the hopes that it might also, as Charles says, go through you like a blast of pure light.

[Disclaimer: this is perhaps Stephen Malkmus at his most showoffiest.]
