33 Things: July Edition

Every month, editorial assistant Michelle Chen will compile the best, weirdest, most interesting music and sound news from the past 30 days and serve it up to you in one handy, easy to digest list. May we present 33 Things that happened in July?

  1. July 27th marked the end of our Open Call where we received over 600 proposals! Have a look through the long list of every album proposed this year.
  2. This one technically happened in June BUT if you missed the New Yorker’s fantastic feature on Andrew Schartmann’s new 33 1/3 on Super Mario Bros, definitely read it right now.
  3. On the topic of new 33 1/3s, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables author Michael Stewart Foley appeared in Punk Globe zine this past Friday—the first historian they’ve ever interviewed in their 39 years of existence!
  4. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the MTV VMA nominations caused some Twitter drama.
  5. And yet Nicki Minaj did not seem to learn that “Taylor Swift is Not Your Friend.”
  6. It’s funny how quickly one photo can escalate into a media spectacle.
  7. Get out your riot grrrl gear because Bikini Kill has announced that they will be reissuing their 1991 demo tape Revolution Girl Style Now on vinyl, CD and Digital!
  8. Here is every single Metallica song ever ranked. Have a look through in anticipation of our Metallica book out in September!
  9. Then perhaps actually listen to The Black Album because metal fans are apparently happier than everyone else
  10. Apparently HBO missed the memo about how much people hate U2.
  11. It may be unbearably hot but you can always hide inside and binge-watch these 25 Essential Punk Rock Movies.
  12. That, or rewatch 8-Mile semi(?)-ironically as you consider reliving your childhood and attending this tentative N.W.A. and Eminem tour.
  13. And in a related video, here is Colbert winning as always a la Slim Shady.
  14. The proletariat revolution has arrived NME is going FREE!
  15. This guy isn’t happy about it though because god forbid the magazine lose its cool club status by being, like, accessible.
  16. Hello, I think I have found one of the most genius Buzzfeed quizzes in existence.
  17. I know Kanye-hating is almost as overrated at this point as Nickelback hating but go Team Coxon!
  18. You officially are what you listen to. (Notice, by the way, a snide Nickelback reference at the end of this article).
  19. No, we’ll never stop talking about vinyl. But really—this is a great read!
  20. Can we, however, please stop talking about this?
  21. Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker gave some love advice this month over at Rookie.
  22. This cannot be real.
  23. This iTunes musician is quite literally not real.
  24. It’s nowhere near as good as her photo-shoot with Kimye but Amy Schumer channeled some Madonna recently.
  25. Wilco’s new album is here and free for download!
  26. Here’s a new and really beautifully shot Public Enemy video.
  27. A Canadian music festival is offering to test your recreational drugs for free to prevent overdoses.
  28. Canada you are really killing it.
  29. Protesters near Cleveland State University met horrific police brutality with powerful Kendrick Lamar lyrics.
  30. Meanwhile, Morrissey is claiming sexual assault by TSA in his typically annoying Morrissey fashion.
  31. I don’t think I can top this Spin headline so I’ll just link to it.
  32. Who else is totally going to purchase some Elvis stamps?
  33. And finally, it turns out that July is truly the month of Eminem.
