New 33 1/3 Title Coming Spring 2017: Homogenic

Ladies and germs! May we present Emily Mackay who will pen the 33 1/3 on Björk’s 1997 album Homogenic. This book is one of 16 new titles in the 33 1/3 series. 

Give it a good long listen!

We caught up with Emily to learn more about their listening and reading habits…

33 1/3: What was your favorite book or record store growing up?

EM: Track Records in York. I moved to York from rural Aberdeenshire when I was 15, and Track seemed like a glittering grotto of lunch-money seven-inches. Closed now, sadly.

33 1/3: What is your favorite book or record store in the world?

EM: Either the obvious choice of Rough Trade in London, because of the history and the great instores, or my local Music & Goods Exchange in Greenwich, London, which is full of treats.

33 1/3: What are you listening to right…NOW?

EM: Lizzo’s forthcoming album Big Grrrl, Small World. It’s incredible – so emotional, so jubilant, so angry and sexy and beautiful.

33 1/3: What are you reading right….NOW?

EM: All Day Long: A Portrait Of Britain At Work by Joanna Biggs – loads of really interesting case studies of different kinds of jobs, illuminating how the world of work has changed and is changing with great stories.

What to expect from Emily’s 33 1/3:

In recent years, Björk’s artistry has become ever more ambitious and ever more respected. With the release of her conceptual app-album Biophilia in 2011, and a huge retrospective exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art coinciding with her most recent album, Vulnicura, in 2015, her status as artpop auteur is secured. The album that made all this possible, though is 1997’s ‘Homogenic’, a turning point in Björk’s career and still among her finest musical achievements. Produced under great strain, it moves beyond the stylistic-magpie rush of Debut and the city-phile future-pop of Post, to something darker, stronger and braver, full of dramatic assertions of independence, sharp, stuttering beats, rich strings and raw outbursts of noise. It created, as the Alexander McQueen designed sleeve clearly asserted, a new Björk, one who would never stop hunting.
