CultureCritic on 33 1/3: Histoire De Melody Nelson

serge gainsbourgThe pre-eminent UK culture criticism blog, CultureCritic, has undertaken a five-part series of posts about 33 1/3, specifically looking at individual forthcoming titles in the series. In the first entry, the author speaks to Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson author Darran Anderson about the five records that wouldn’t exist without Gainsbourg’s. We definitely learned some things about the chanteur‘s far-reaching influence, and were reminded of some other great albums besides. As CultureCritic says, Histoire is “a splendid concept album whose debauched and downright seedy atmosphere is as overpowering (and as French) as a strong whiff of Brut, even if you can’t understand the words.”

Here’s the piece, complete with handy Amazon link for pre-ordering purposes.

For more on Darran’s thoughts about Gainsbourg and his book, which publishes this October stateside (December in the UK), check out our Q&A.
