The Geto Boys and Rap-A-Lot Records get credit for putting Houston on the hip-hop map in the early 1990s, but this wasn’t the first time the city’s Fifth Ward had influenced national music tastes.
Peacock Records, founded in Houston’s Fifth Ward four decades earlier, had helped launch the mid-century careers of artists like Little Richard, Memphis Slim, and The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi.
The most iconic Peacock Records single from that era was Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog, ” which topped the R&B charts in 1953.
