October, what a month. A discipline-defining Sound Studies conference in Berlin, the announcement of a new and expanded edition of Carl Wilson’s 33 1/3 on Celine Dion AND the release of the first 33 1/3 after an 18 month dry spell. I’ve just returned from Berlin where 3 days of fascinating papers and presentations contributed to the solidifying of a very young academic discipline. So there will be lots more on this blog about that very soon. I also had currywurst for the first time and the jury is still out.
I also discovered (thanks to Background Noise author Brandon LaBelle) Pro qm bookstore in the Mitte area of Berlin. They have an incredible selection of music, art and design books. I mean…just look at this music section! How many Continuum/Bloomsbury books can you spot? Hint: There are 8!
Bloomsbury is so thrilled to be publishing (well, re-publishing) Carl Wilson’s truly brilliant book about Celine Dion. It’s coming out of the series (don’t worry, the original little book will remain in print) with 14 brand new essays from the likes of Nick Hornby, James Franco, Daphne Brooks, Jonathan Sterne and Krist Novoselic. It will be out on March 13, 2014 and available in your local bookstore. If you haven’t read this thing yet, here is your second chance to get on the band wagon.
In series news…I’m currently working on Definitely Maybe, Donuts, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I’m also gearing up for the open call that I’ll announce right here on this blog at the end of January 2014. I’m changing the guidelines a bit, but I can promise you that you’ll need to supply a detailed table of contents and the first 2000 words just like last time.
They Might Be Giants’ Flood is approved and off to press. Copies will be available just before thanksgiving.
Also, if you live in New York City and are a music fan, might I point you in the direction of Word bookstore in Greenpoint? “Not only do they stock most of the titles in the series, but they also host a reading group for music writing. December’s book just happens to be Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson.
And in the BREAKING NEWS category: we’ve just received advance copies of Serge Gainsbourg from the printers! You can get yours on Oct 24th.
