Video Vault Episode 73: Cayetana

It may not be the most high-brow thing to admit, but I’ll always have a place in my heart for some good-old-fashioned indie-pop/”pop-punk”/whatever-they-call-it to lift the mood.* Which is how I found myself a few Saturdays ago at an all-ages free show amidst a sea of 16-year-olds in the sweltering heat of McCarren Park to see Philly-based band Cayetana. Seriously, it was unbearably hot. Pre-show, all we could do was miserably down bottles of water while the sound system, for some bizarre reason, blasted System of a Down’s Toxicity (yes, they played multiple songs from that album). Talk about a nightmare trip down memory lane.

And so today I bring you this adorable video from the imminently lovable trio, who were certainly worth braving the heat to see. Of all the bands to be over-hyped in the circuit of music festival round-ups this past year, Cayetana was definitely not one. When their debut album Nervous Like Me came out, I played it on repeat as my commuting music for two weeks straight and considered moving to Fishtown and sleeping til 11 for the rest of my life. As such, my message this Friday is: Revel in the guitars and the confetti. Dye your hair blue. Don’t let anyone make you listen to Brian Eno if you don’t want to.

*Having a rough morning? Try listening to some early Lemuria—unless you like, I don’t know, hate joy.
