Geto Boys Week – Day 5: Keeping Up With the Geto Boys

TO CELEBRATE THE RECENT RELEASE OF OUR 33 1/3 ON  THE GETO BOYS, WE’RE PLEASED TO BRING YOU THE FIFTH AND FINAL INSTALLMENT OF GETO BOYS WEEK BY AUTHOR ROLF POTTS!

One challenge in writing for the 33 1/3 series is that making the case for a given album’s importance involves curating and condensing a sprawling wealth of information into a 30,000-word narrative. For the most part my narrative in The Geto Boys analyzes events and collaborations from the late 1980s and early 1990s. What happened to the members of the Geto Boys in ensuing decades gets a paragraph at most.

Fortunately, 21st century online media and podcasting culture offers an interactive appendix to the events described in my book, often recounted by the performers themselves. Here are some recent long-form interviews with members of the Geto Boys a quarter-century after their controversial 1990 album dropped:

Willie D on the Combat Jack Show, April 26, 2016

DJ Ready Red on Vlad TV, September 22, 2015

Scarface on Power 105.1’s Breakfast Club, April 23, 2015

Nardwuar interviews Bushwick Bill at SXSW, March 28, 2014

Elsewhere, NPR Music interviewed Geto Boys mastermind and Rap-A-Lot Records CEO J. Prince (James Smith) in an article called ‘It Was Like Flies To Honey’: 25 Years Of Rap-A-Lot Records.
