We are excited to announce the winner of the 33 1/3 under 22 open call. Congratulations to Ada Wolin for her proposal on Golden Hits of the Shangri-Las!
How to Write About Music editor and 22 and under open call judge, Marc Woodworth, has this to say about the selection:
As one of the editors of the 33 1/3-based book How To Write About Music as well as a contributor to the series (#38: Bee Thousand), I’m grateful to have had the chance to read these passionate and intelligent proposals from so many strong young writers. I have no doubt that a good number of them will contribute a great deal of worthwhile music writing over the coming years. I look forward to reading as many of those contributions as possible and I’m especially excited about the book Ada Wolin will write on Golden Hits of the Shangri-Las for the 33 1/3 series. Her proposal for the 33 1/3 under 22 call shows her to be a writer and music lover deeply inside her subject, one who follows her finely calibrated nose rather than conventional nostrums or overly familiar postures when it comes to discussing songs and their contexts. She’s a vivid descriptive writer who’s already mastered what it takes most of us a long time to learn: how to tell a good story, how to get out of her own way, and how to deploy understatement and fact rather than giving in to the temptations of the sententious and the overly abstract. She will write a very rich, entertaining, and novel book, one that will prove satisfying and idiosyncratically brilliant on its own while expanding the breadth and scope of the series as a whole. Congratulations and go to it, Ada.
